Ideal when there are more than two of you
Our campervans sleep two. A travelcar carries four, so three or four friends can travel New Zealand together for a couple of months or longer.
Stay at campsites
Ideal for staying at DOC campsites, regular campsites, or a cabin at a campsite. DOC sites are inexpensive and in some of the best spots in the country.
Tent or mattress
Sleep in a tent beside the car, or fold the seats down and put a mattress inside. Whichever suits the night and the weather.
Room for the gear
The rear seat comes out, which leaves a large luggage area behind the middle row. Four people, four packs, and the tent.
Why buy instead of rent?
Once you need a car for longer than a month, renting stops making sense. With a buy-back you drive until the last moment, then hand the car back without the hassle of selling it before your flight home.
Renting a car
- Daily rates add up fast over a month or more
- Daily insurance on top, every day of the trip
- Nothing to show for it at the end
Kiwi Road Trips buy-back
- One cost for the whole trip, up to 6 months
- Insure your own car for around $70–90 per month
- Buy-back price known on day one, so there are no surprises
High season or low season?
Your price depends on when you travel and for how long.
Low season: save $1,000
Your whole trip is outside January and February, and lasts 2 months or less.
High season
Any part of your trip is in January or February, or your trip is longer than 2 months. Prices cover up to 6 months.
Buying a travelcar in New Zealand
Ideal for campsites and DOC camping grounds. A travelcar gives you the freedom of your own car for a long trip without paying a rental company by the day for months on end.
A travelcar is one of our Toyota Estimas with the seats left in, so it seats four people comfortably. The back seat is taken out, which turns the rear of the car into a large luggage area for four packs and a tent. Park up at a DOC campsite or a regular campsite, pitch the tent, or fold the middle seats down and put a mattress inside. Many campsites also have cabins if you would rather have a bed and a roof for a night or two.
The car is sold to you with a guaranteed buy-back price agreed on the day you buy it, so you know your whole trip cost before you set off. At the end of your travels you drive it back to us, hand over the keys and get your money, rather than spending your last fortnight in New Zealand trying to sell a car. Every travelcar comes with a valid WOF and registration, unlimited travel km, breakdown and engine failure cover, and our free emergency contact and physical address service.
Pick up is in sunny Tauranga, ten minutes from the beaches of Mount Maunganui, about an hour from Rotorua and close to Hobbiton. Karen and Pete are only a phone call away during your travels and happy to help you plan your route. See our 40-day itinerary, and if you would rather sleep in the vehicle itself, have a look at our campervans with buy-back.
