Why buy instead of rent?
Renting a campervan is an expensive way to travel, and insurance alone can cost as much as $40 a day. With a buy-back you drive until the last moment, then return the van to us without the hassle of selling it before your flight home.
Renting a campervan
- Often more than $100 per day
- Expensive daily insurance, sometimes $40 a day on its own
- Costs keep adding up the longer you travel
Kiwi Road Trips buy-back
- Can cost as little as $30 per day
- Insure your own van for around $70–90 per month
- Buy-back price known on day one, so there are no surprises
Other costs
On top of your trip cost you pay for fuel and insurance. Because you own the van, vehicle insurance usually costs around $70–90 per month, depending on your age. We highly recommend full comprehensive insurance and an AA Roadservice membership. See our FAQ for details.
Buying a campervan in New Zealand
Buying a Kiwi Road Trips campervan is the most awesome and economical way to travel around New Zealand. With your transport and your accommodation sorted in one go, you can sit back and enjoy exploring this wonderful country, from the beaches of Northland to the mountains and lakes of the South Island.
Renting a campervan is an expensive way to do it, particularly with insurance alone sometimes costing as much as $40 per day. Instead of renting, our campervans are sold with a buy-back guarantee. You buy the van, it is registered in your name, and at the end of your travels you sell it back to us at a price we agree on at the start. Because you own the van, insurance is much cheaper too.
The buy-back gives you peace of mind. Many backpackers who buy a van privately spend their last weeks trying to sell it, often for much less than they paid. With us, you can drive until the last moment, then drop off the van and jump on your plane home without any hassle.
Every van is a reliable Toyota Estima, self-contained certified to the new Green standard so you can freedom camp legally, and sold with a valid WOF and registration. Our four levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Premium, depend on the age and condition of the van, so you can choose the one that suits your budget and your trip.
Pick up is in sunny Tauranga, a perfect place to begin your New Zealand adventure. It is ten minutes from the white sand beaches of Mount Maunganui, about an hour from Rotorua’s geysers and hot pools, and close to Hobbiton. Karen and Pete are only a phone call away during your travels, and happy to help you plan your route. See our 40-day itinerary and our freedom camping guide.
